D-Link DI-704P 4-port 10BaseT/100BaseTX Broadband Gateway with Print Server Review

D-Link DI-704P 4-port 10BaseT/100BaseTX Broadband Gateway with Print Server
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased a refurbished model for around [$$$] and everything was in perfect order. The old admin password had already been removed so there was no problem accessing configuration.
The D-Link DI-704P is very easy to hook up. I especially like the idea of having all the wiring in back and the LED's in front. As far as documentation; it is all included on the cd in pdf format. I suppose this keeps the cost down.
Getting things up and running took about half an hour, mostly because of one small undocumented glitch. It just would not connect. The problem was easily solved after reviewing the FAQ's on D-Link's web site. All I had to do was run winipcfg and release the current settings, then renew. After that just power down everything (computer, router, cablemodem). Then power the cablemodem back up and let it cycle through its procedures; power on the router; then the computer. All works perfect.
One of the main reason for choosing this unit was the print server feature. The software installed flawlessly, and reconfiguring my printer to direct it towards the D-Link print server was easy (HP DeskJet 420). Printing functions normally, so now my computer does not have to be on 24/7 to act as the print server.
I rate this product 5 stars for value and performance, but minus one star because the faq answer should have been included in the original documentation. So maybe a 4 1/2 star rating is more appropriate.

The DI-704P broadband router is a cost effective solution giving you the privilege of sharing your printer on the network without the need to purchase another print server. The router has a built-in 4-port switch plus a parallel port to share a printer. It has MAC filtering to allow you to allow or deny computers on the network access to the Internet. The router also serves as a firewall along with Network Address Translation which allows you to share a single IP address to protect you from outside intruders gaining access to your private network. The DI-704P includes a new, easy-to-use web based graphical user interface to easily configure the router the way you want it to be.

NETGEAR RP114 - Router - desktop Review

NETGEAR RP114 - Router - desktop
Average Reviews:

I used it for less than a month. It replaced an Netgear RT-314 I had before. I was happy with the basic functionality of the RT-314, and I wanted to add some kind of parental control (essentially limit the hours my children could use the Internet).
The RP114 is advertised as having that capability, but it is quite limited. You can only set global access hours, there is no way to target different users. I also found that both the RT-314 and RP-114 would not allow multiple VPN sessions simultaneously, and I had to reboot the router to be able to connect to ATT Net Client after my wife had connected to her company. This was a great annoyance, and I finally returned the RP114 and bought an SMC Barricade 7004-ABR. That solved the problem with VPN. And to my surprise, the Barricade has the parental controls I needed, but they are not trumpeted on the box like netgear does, plus it has a print server. All for about [price] more....

Netgear's RP114 cable/DSL Web-safe router with four-port switch gives parents and network administrators complete control over network contact with the Internet. Assign restricted access policies based on time of day, Web address, or Web address keywords--the RP114 enforces these policies and sends you e-mail reports on all browsing activity, plus instant alerts to notify you of unauthorized Web page access attempts. Rest assured that your network is protected against hackers, thanks to the RP114's Network Address Translation (NAT) firewall. You can share your high-speed cable/DSL Internet access with as many as 253 personal computers. Constructed of sturdy metal, this compact router is designed for durability and easy setup. Web-based instructions guide you through the installation process, so your network, including Windows, Macintosh, and Linux operating systems, can be up and running in less than an hour.

Netopia R910 Ethernet Router (4-port) Review

Netopia R910 Ethernet Router (4-port)

So for your small network you need a Router, 4port hub and occationally want to connect to it from on the road.
this is the box you want, It will do everything other routers do
plus it has a VPN SERVER that works with windows right out of
the box. It natively support PPTP, so you do not need additional software. Beware with other VPN server like linksys you WILL need a client software it you are using windows.
Negative: telnet administration, with more learning curve than
the web based interfaces you see with Linksys, etc.

SMC SMC7004VBR Barricade Cable/DSL Router with 4-Port 10/100Mbps Switch Review

SMC SMC7004VBR Barricade Cable/DSL Router with 4-Port 10/100Mbps Switch
Average Reviews:

Before I bought this particular router I gave a fair consideration to equivalent products from other manufacturers. My objectives were as follows: a 4-port router with flexible parental controls and reliable firewall at a reasonable price. SMC7004VBR turned out to be a clear winner. Setup can be done in manual (advanced) or assisted (wizard) mode, via a browser interface. I used the advanced option but also verified the wizard afterwards, for completeness of this review. Worth noting is that the router reboots almost every time you click the "apply" button. This results in a temporary loss of communication (~30 sec) between the router and the computer, which may look a little disturbing. Additional note: if you decide to change the router's LAN address, it will reboot with the new IP so the browser needs to follow. All settings are fairly standard except for one: SMC decided to set firewall to OFF by default. So remember to go to the firewall settings and turn it ON manually (and click "apply"). A somewhat debatable approach, especially that there is no word about it in the User Guide. The parental controls are very good. This router is capable of blocking up to 30 user-defined web sites based either on the URL or a phrase included in the URL. A very important tool if you have young children at home. When one of them attempts to connect to a banned URL the router just hangs with no other indication so it looks like the remote site is simply not responding. Other routers that I am familiar with send a message back stating that the URL was blocked. I prefer SMC's gentle implementation. There are also settings for defining the Internet access time and day per computer. Other setting like port triggering, forwarding, DMZ etc are there. These are standard on all routers these days. The security features make this router really stand out. Unlike other models in this class, SMC7004VBR can identify several types of hacker attacks and send alerts to a predefined email address. SMC did an excellent job implementing full POP3 account settings. Other vendors provide only basic configuration (i.e. only SMTP server name, no password), which may cause alerts to get lost under certain circumstances (dynamic IP). I was a little disappointed to see that SMC does not give options for other email alerts (i.e. triggered by the URL filter) but hopefully they will consider it in future firmware releases. Software upgrade functionality works flowlessly. I upgraded my router after visiting SMC web site and realizing there was a newer version available. The support via their web site is sufficient, I really did not have any reasons to call them on the phone. In my configuration, this product functions not only as a firewall but it provides high-speed network connectivity between my home computers. A remote (near the ceiling) Wireless Access Point is connected to one of the ports. The bottom line: two thumbs up!

I originally purchased a Linksys DSL/Cable router because of a clerk's recommendation. It never worked even after I took it back and got a replacement. I then purchased a Netgear ProSafe router which sort of worked with the BellSouth DSL modem but still had all sorts of packet losses. I went back to the store and purchased the Belkin Cable/DSL router and it worked flawlessly right out of the box! I ran the set-up cd-rom, attached the cables, and I was on-line in 3 minutes. I then hooked in my wife's computer and laptop and they too worked after booting. If you have BellSouth DSL or any other "finicky" ISP, this router is the one to get, it saved the day!!

Cisco-Linksys BEFSX41 EtherFast Cable/DSL Firewall Router (4-Port 10/100 Switch / VPN Endpoint)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've used two SX41s for over three years on DSL and they are rock solid providing that I don't violate the cardinal rules of operation. The VPN tunnels are easy to set up if you follow the guidelines. First of all you must use a stable firmware. 1.45.7 is the most stable. The latest 1.52.9 is okay, but not as stable. Also you must NEVER set any of the Web Filters to deny or you will have reboots. Generally it is as simple as that.
There are also rules for flashing that must be observed. It doesn't matter whether you use a ver 1 firmware on a ver 2 router or visa versa. Thinking there is a difference is nonsense. What DOES matter is that the router MUST be reset to factory defaults (30 secs on the reset button will do this) before a flash or you risk bricking the router. When flashing with the Web page flashing tool, use IE or you will risk bricking the router. Use the TFTP utility for the SX41 obtainable from Linksys if you wish to use a Mozilla-based browser to flash. After you flash, you should reset once again to factory defaults. There are residual register settings carried over from the previous firmware versions that can cause reboots and other malfunctions.
Even the best flashing procedures can fail, but there are procedures for recovering from a bad flash at DSLReports.com. The recovery rate is probably better than 90% using those techniques. Guidelines for setting tunnels up are also posted there as well as access to the 1.45.7 stable firmware.
Successful operation of the SX41 requires modest intelligence, some networking experience, and following the operating rules. Linksys support hasn't a clue as to what those rules are so don't even bother with them unless you are trying for an RMA for a defective unit. Basically the router has gotten a bad rap from people who don't know how to operate it. Unfortunately they can't learn how to do that from the minimalist manual or from the so-called tech support personnel. Ask for operation help in the Linksys forum on the above mentioned web site if you are struggling with this router.

D-Link DI-604 Cable/DSL Router, 4-Port Switch Review

D-Link DI-604 Cable/DSL Router, 4-Port Switch
Average Reviews:

The DI-604 is a great little router. Though I would never recommend that someone who knows nothing about configuring a router to try it on their own, this may be an exception. It has effective wizards and a remarkably user friendly interface that is accessed through your favorite web browser. The firewall seems to be effective, though my single complaint does come from that part of the device. I am yet to figure out how to shut it off when I would need to. . . But, it can be done.
I share a DSL connection over this router. I also file share and print share through the device. It has done a great job at all of the above. I have recommended this product to countless people since I purchased it in September.

Actiontec GT724R Universally Compatible 4-port ADSL Gateway (Gray) Review

Actiontec GT724R Universally Compatible 4-port ADSL Gateway (Gray)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
bought this one to replace Westell DSL modem (used 6 years), along with netgear wired router
setup is easy, it comes with Verizon DSL settings, choose it, and get online in 10 minutes
the unit runs cool, and doesn't use up much power like 2 units
internet is a bit faster than previous units
there's some reason I don't give 5 stars:
1. it doesn't support dynamic DDNS (dyndns, no-ip), to make it work, you must have a dedicated computer to have it running
2. kinda buggy port forwarding setup (unable to remove it if you make mistake, requires factory reset
3. no setting backup/restore options: that you have to start all over after fw upgrade or factory reset
4. site blocking doesn't have "all computers" option, that I have to setup blocking on individual computers, big hassle! (I have to put in same setting on 6 computers!!! and I have nearly 100 sites to be blocked)
update: it doesn't work with slingbox streaming over internet (firewall issue), you must purchase a separate router (wired or wireless), go to advanced, set DSL mode to RPC bridging mode, use any LAN port to router's WAN port, and setup PPPoE in the router
after that, internet streaming works like charm

NETGEAR RP614 Web Safe Router with 4-Port 10/100 Mbps Switch Review

NETGEAR RP614 Web Safe Router with 4-Port 10/100 Mbps Switch
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As other reviewers have noted, the router is very easy to set up. However, it has two major flaws which would keep me from recommend this unit:
1. The router randomly locks up several times a week. It requires a power off then on in order to start working again.
2. The router times out idle TCP session after a few minutes, and there is no way to disable or change this timeout. After the timeout the connection is dropped and has to be re-established. This is a *major* annoyance for people like me who use ssh or telnet to log into outside machines, but it can also cause problems with chat clients or other network applications if you are idle for a few minutes. This behavior has been confirmed by Netgear tech support, and they don't have a solution.
Between these two flaws, I recommend against buying this unit. Netgear's previous generation product (RP314) was rock solid, it's sad to see Netgear go so far downhill.

The NETGEAR RP614 Web Safe Router with 4-Port 10/100 Mbps Switch lets you easily share a broadband connection by creating a secure network with double firewall protection.
Simple Setup NETGEAR has made setting up network devices as painless as possible with their interactive Installation Assistant that guides you through setup step by step. Configuration is done through an easy-to-use web interface.
Outstanding Performance and Security The RP614 features four auto-sensing 10/100 Mbps Ethernet ports that will figure out each network connection without any need for manual switches. The RP614 allows for transfer of movies, music and photos at up 200 Mbps so the video and sound will be clear.
Two security methods are utilized to keep the network secure: Network Address Translation (NAT) and Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI). SPI safeguards against popular Denial of Service (DoS) attacks. For parents, content filtering allows you to set filters so that children are unable to reach websites with certain keywords or domain names, such as those associated with pornography. Web access can also be limited by the day of the week and time of day.
Styling That Fits In Your Home The RP614 has a svelte design with silver-and-gray styling that won't look out of place in your home.

DO NOT BUY A REFURBISHED OR RE-CERTIFIED ROUTER, UNLESS YOU ARE GETTING A WARRANTY ALSO. THIS INCLUDES THE AMAZON MARKETPLACE! The thing with Linksys, is that the tech support is excellent; available 24/7! If you surf the web at 2am Wednesday and need help, Linksys is there. No need to worry about being told to call back during business hours. This particular modem just kept acting up. I had a warranty, so after the third complaint about this model, they agreed to send me another router. Most of the stars that I give for this product, is for the tech support. NOT the model itself.

I was using a Linksys wired router/switch for a few years. I was constantly losing VPN connection and having to re-connect. I put in VOIP (Vonage) phone and had to restart every 3 hours. I thought I had cable modem problems, network problems, config. problems on router. Finally, I ordered the D-Link EBR-2310 (because it was very inexpensive). I took it out of the box, plugged it in, connected my (4) network cables including a wireless connection. In 6 weeks I have not had a single connection problem. TRENDnet 4-Port Broadband Router TW100-S4W1CA (Blue) Review

TRENDnet 4-Port Broadband Router TW100-S4W1CA (Blue)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this Trendnet to replace an old Netgear router, which was still working fine, except it couldn't keep Outlook connected to its remote Exchange server. I suspected that the old router was too slow to handle the RPC over http (Exchange Proxy) connection that Outlook uses, but I wasn't sure. So I was looking for a new and ultra-low-cost router to see if it would fix the problem. This router solved the problem immediately - in fact Outlook connects faster from home now than it does at the office.
This router was easy to install and set up. At first I was reluctant to switch brands because I was already familiar with configuring Netgear routers (I also have a Netgear wireless router configured as an access point.) But I didn't have any trouble navigating the admin screens for the Trendnet. I connected my Netgear wireless router to one port of the Trendnet as a wireless access point and it works perfectly.
(Why two routers? My home office with its several computers is located at a corner of the house - a poor location for the wireless router. So the Trendnet router stays in the office. A cable runs from the Trendnet to a centrally located closet, where the Netgear wireless router lives. Some special configuration of the routers is required for this setup - it's explained on the Netgear web site.)
My only complaint about the Trendnet is the red flashing status light. According to the documentation that came with my router this light was supposed to be green, so I was trying to figure out what problem was causing it to flash red. Eventually I discovered that "OK" is now flashing red, not green. Personally I'd prefer a green light for OK - the flashing red can be distracting.
I hope that this router will prove as reliable as my Netgear routers have been.

We have a PC upstairs, which is our primary computer, and a Mac downstairs in the tv room. I wanted both to be able to share our broadband Internet service. I looked at several routers, both wired and wireless. It came down to the Linksys (wired version) and SMC Barricade Wireless. I kept coming back to Linksys because a friend owns one and raves about it.
Besides the fact that it looks really cool, it almost took me longer to get it out of the box than it did to set it up. No kidding! Using the QuickStart guide, I was up and running in less than ten minutes. You hook up the necessary cables, restart your computer, log-in to the Linksys website to configure your router, restart your computer again, and you're good to go.
I wasn't as optimistic about setting up my Power Mac G3. However, I was pleasantly surprised and it took me all of about five minutes before I was doing some high-speed surfing on that machine as well. Fortunately, my Mac has an Ethernet port so it was just a matter of attaching the CAT-5 cable from there to the Linksys and setting the TCP/IP control panel to the Ethernet and DHCP options. I saved my configuration, opened up my browser and spent the next two hours high-speed surfing with no problems.
I have no problem recommending the Linksys, especially for its ease of setup on a PC and Mac network. While I would have preferred a wireless setup, they've received mixed reviews and I was concerned about Mac compatibility. After seeing how well my Mac performs with this Linksys, I'm ready to make ours a wired household!

The Linksys EtherFast cable/DSL router connects multiple PCs to a high-speed broadband Internet connection or to an Ethernet backbone. Configurable as a DHCP server, the EtherFast router acts as the only externally recognized Internet device on your local area network (LAN). The router can also be configured to block internal users' access to the Internet. A typical router relies on a hub or a switch to share its Internet connection, but the Linksys EtherFast router channels this connection through the full-duplex speed of its built-in EtherFast 10/100 four-port switch. This combination of router and switch technology eliminates the need to buy an additional hub or switch and serves your network as a completely dedicated, full-duplex backbone. Now your entire network can enjoy broadband Internet connections supported by its switched backbone. This unit requires an external cable or DSL modem with an Ethernet RJ-45 interface. This product comes with a one-year warranty.
