(More customer reviews)We had a firewall crash at the office and decided to replace our old, high-end, Raptor firewall with a Netgear RP614. That router was easy to setup and configure and got us up and running quickly after the firewall crash. However, it was unreliable and tended to suffer from heat exhaustion. During one business day we had to reboot the router 20 times before finally leaving it unplugged overnight so it could cool off and function normally again. We gave up and decided to go with this router.
This router packs the punch of some high end Cisco routers at a fraction of the cost. It is highly configurable, and allows for a variety of complex NAT/PAT setups, port forwarding, packet filters, classless subneting, and more. The manual is very comprehensive. VPN connections do not require any custom software. The e-mail support has been in 24 hours or less.
I have two complaints:
1) The latest firmware does not allow for stable PPTP VPN connections. They suggest rolling back to an old release, which I have not yet tried.
2) The router does not support DNS forwarding. If you have your network setup with static IPs, you will have to add your ISPs DNS servers to the local workstation configurations.
This router is NOT geared towards consumers. Although it does have a setup wizard that makes it easy to configure a basic installation, it is overkill for someone who does not have a good TCP/IP skillset. At this point we've only had it for a week, so I can't be sure that it is more reliable thant the RP614, but so far so good.
UPDATE: With the latest firmware, I have had no issues with maintaining a stable PPTP VPN connection.

The plug for it seems to be a bit loose, but that might just be my wireless device. The Velcro attachment for the antenna works well and is pretty convenient too. Decent cable length for getting this up into the air when necessary as well.

AT&T Quicksilver USB Connect Card (AT&T) Review

(More customer reviews)Just got a new Apple Macbook Air version 2, and wanted to be really really flexible when traveling, so I added this new USB 3G card to the mix. The card is only a few weeks old at this time, and so the Mac drivers have to be downloaded directly from the manufacturer's website, as AT&T only includes the Windows drivers in the package. I can understand in the rush to get the card out they probably focused on the more widely used windows drivers, and I had no problem downloading the latest mac driver and instruction sheet from the manufacturer's website.
I did run into 2 stumbling blocks. First this thing is bigger in real life than the picture would make it seem. I thought it would be more like my small USB memory cards in size, and so when I saw it for the 1st time at the AT&T store I was a little surprised how big it is. In fact it's too bulky to fit into my Macbook Air's USB Port - there is just not enough clearance, so I had to buy a USB extension cable, which actually kind of worked out ok because I can put it nearer the window and away from the computer for better 3G reception.
The other stumbling block was a misleading direction in the otherwise very clear installation manual to leave the "APN" field blank on the Mac software. I wasn't able to connect even though everything looked good to me and the AT&T tech on the phone until he asked what the APN was set to. Turns out for AT&T, they use "isp.cingular" in all lower case with no user-name or password as the APN for all the data connect cards. Once I set that up I was working fine, with very decent 3G speeds.
So it seems to work fine so far after a few days of use now, and I finally have that go anywhere laptop experience I was always wishing for.

USB MODEM UTSTARCOM 175 BROADBAND ACCESS PHONE CARD VERIZON CDMA Review

(More customer reviews)Living out in the sticks, dialup internet access was what I had to live with for ages. When Verizon added a tower that improved my cell phone coverage, I started wondering if it was an option for my PC as well. I'm not an early adopter of new technology and waited until neighbors had tried various options before I was willing to try this service. I've been using an extra phone line for the computer, the removal of which will save me half what this service costs monthly. Still it's an extra thirty bucks, so it has to be worth it to me.
Some neighbors are using the satellite service but aren't completely satisfied. The only negative comment I got about this little modem and the service was that there is a limit on how much access you get--5 gig/mo--which means you won't be downloading movies or playing internet games much, if at all. Since this isn't an issue for me, I decided to give it a try.
It is definitely faster than dialup access even at the fastest dialup modem speed. I use AOL and the TCP/IP connect is about 3-5 times faster, then all that stuff they display loads much faster as well and I can go about my business without waiting for more than a few seconds. That said, the transfer rate doesn't compare with the Comcast speed of my daughter's setup in town. This service is faster than dialup, but not 'blinding' by any means. As an example, in the past when I tried to download something, I noted the transfer rate on dialup was something like 4-6k per second. Sigh!! Things took forever and sometimes wouldn't download at all. I downloaded the update for my Kindle last night with this little modem and noted 50k/sec transfer rate. Certainly a lot better.
The speed does seem to depend on 'how crowded the air waves' are (or however you'd say that in technospeak :) and how many bars you get. I've found the number of bars is the same as what I get on my Verizon cell phone. Where my desktop PC is located, it varies from 0 to 2. I have ordered the antenna in hopes of boosting that.
Installing the little modem is as easy as running the CD installation disk that comes with it and then plugging the modem into a USB port when prompted to do so. It also comes with a cable in case you want to plug into a port on the back of a desktop PC and set the modem somewhere with easier access. You can leave the modem attached all the time if you want. It turns off when you turn the PC off. When on, it flashes a blue light, which means it's ready to pick up a signal. To connect your computer to the broadband service, you use the modem software (push the 'connect' button), which to me, seems to be equivalent to turning your cell phone on (the modem has a phone number). It is then ready for you to 'make a call', i.e. connect to the internet using some software such as Internet Explorer or AOL.
You can leave the modem connected all day like you would leave your cell phone on and not affect the data limit since that only happens when you are connected to and using the internet. If you use the internet with your cell phone, you know there is a data limit with it as well. This is sort of the same thing.
The modem software will show you what your usage is each time you connect so you're aware of what you've used so far. Sending emails, Facebook updates, photos, etc uses part of your allocation, as well as downloading files, photos, etc. Various internet screen refresh activities uses some. Watching streaming video or playing games uses a lot. Listening to internet radio uses enough that you probably won't want to do that all the time. For me, after 5 days of email, Facebook postings, attempting to watch some short videos and listening to the AOL radio one day just to see what impact it would have, plus downloading the Kindle software update, posting a few Amazon reviews, and the like, I've used about 225mg, or about 50mg a day, so I should be able to stay within the limit easily with no change to my regular internet activities.
I still cannot really watch streaming videos such as those on YouTube with my 1-2 bar connectivity, without breaks while it reloads the next bit. Even though it reloads faster than before, I have to want to see it pretty badly to put up with that.
One concern: This morning there seemed to be a problem with the modem connecting to Verizon. It was resolved within half an hour and it is Black Friday, which may or may not have anything to do with it. I will update if that happens again, but otherwise it has connected fast and remained connected without problem.
Bottom line: It is definitely better than dialup--for me about 5 times faster. That's not seriously fast, but acceptable and worth the extra money to me, especially since I don't have any options other than satellite which is affected by weather, trees, and costs more as well.

1PORT Docsis 2.0 Cable Hwic Review

The review below is based on my dealings with Comcast in July of 2009 when I first purchased the unit.What can I say? It would be a beautiful thing if this HWIC in my 1841 router was supported by Comcast. I could then consolidate the modem, router and switch into a nice 1U rack-mountable device that would fit perfectly into a small network cabinet in the basement.
I made some progress with Comcast. At one point cable-modem0/0/0 was pulling a DHCP address and after getting the device configured via CLI I got a workstation out to Comcast's walled garden. I was unable to get it to activate...I should have called Comcast at that point but I messed around, erased my config, rebuilt the config...spent countless hours on the phone with Comcast trying to get the HFC Mac address of the modem squared away.
Most recently, I was informed by Comcast that the HFC Mac address of the cisco hwic-modem is showing as a LEASED modem in their system...and apparently I am going to be charged for having posession of 2 leased modems at the same time until I resolve it at my local Comcast office.
In any case. Oh sorry, this is supposed to be a Cisco HWIC-Cable-Modem-D-2 review. =) I was actually a little surprised at the lack of end-user documentation for this device. Typically Cisco has a plethora of configuration examples to get a base configuration on any given device. From the limited experience I've had with the HWIC, it appears to function no differently than a typical Ethernet or FastEthernet interface when being addressed from CLI. With DOCSIS, the ISP should be providing some sort of configuration to the device through magic or whatever.
The limited information I found online through forums and discussions have stated that the HWIC-Cable-Modem-D-2 is rock solid, fewer errors than consumer-grade modems, fewer dropouts, more reliable and robust.
I just caution anyone purchasing this item in hopes of using it with Comcast as an ISP. I had no problems getting a technician to enter the HFC Mac address in on their end...but I've had nothing but problems since.

(More customer reviews)This DSL modem is a piece of junk. Not exactly sure what the problem with this thing is, but it has to be cold booted (unplug it, wait 15 seconds, plug it in again) every morning if I want to retain the through-put I'm paying for.
If you own one of these things you can see for yourself how bad it is by running a speed test at the DSL Reports website before doing a cold boot and after doing a cold boot. In my case the download speed *DOUBLES* after a reboot.

Power Supply for 2Wire 1000HG 1000HW 5V 2.0A 100-240V Review

I tried 2 units with the same specs (5V, ~2A) as the one advertised here that I borrowed from some USB hubs but they didn't work, however a 6V 2.5A rated transformer does the job. Now I'm looking for a switch mode supply to replace the big transformer, but I'm skeptical about using anything rated less than 6V.
Also the correct plug size is 5.5mm OD/2.5mm ID, not 7mm/4mm as listed.

Ready Broadband Nationwide Mobile Broadband Internet Connection (Black) Review

(More customer reviews)I've had an Asus netbook for nearly two years and finally decided to equip it with a mobile broadband card. Since my need for such a device would be very casual (I have a 15Mbps cable modem connection with wifi router at home and 3G data on my phone) I was looking for a service that wouldn't require some lengthy contract or a large investment up front. Virgin Mobile seemed to offer more economical plans ($20 for 300 MB) but the initial cost of their modem was significantly higher. ReadyMobile seemed to fit both requirements, especially with respect to start-up costs.
First, I'll talk briefly about the modem. It is a Sierra Compass 598 which runs on Sprint's network. Setting up the device might require a little patience for some users. While the instruction sheet says you can plug the USB modem right in and install drivers from imbedded flash memory, I was unable to do so. That will require installing those files from an included CD-ROM. For those of you, like myself, who have a netbook with no optical drive present, you'll need to copy the entire installation package, about 95 MB total, on to an SD card or USB flash drive. The driver software set-up process took longer than I expected, but eventually I was able to get everything running. To finalize the set-up and establish service, you have to call ReadyMobile and speak to a service rep. I was on hold for about 10 minutes, then spent another five minutes getting the account activated.
The service itself seems to work just fine. I was able to play full-sized CNN news videos with very little buffering, though I could tell things didn't run as smoothly when compared to my 15Mbps cable connection. That's to be expected given the difference between an EVDO connection and a cable connection over wifi. As far as basic web browsing and email is concerned, the ReadyMobile handles both tasks quite effectively. Video sites such as YouTube are certainly watchable, but can chew quite a bit off your MB balance. I do not recommend this service if you're planning on streaming tons of audio or video on a regular basis.
I decided on the $25 plan for 250MB of data. That is about the only plan ReadyMobile offers that is cost-effective for light users. The $40/600MB plan is not a good value, and the $75/1GB plan is an absolute rip-off. If you will be using large amounts data over an extended period of time, Virgin Mobile broadband offers a much better value. However, if you're somebody who needs a more temporary mobile broadband set-up for occasional usage, ReadyMobile is quite economical thanks to their lower-cost modem. It certainly is more suited to my needs than those expensive long-term contract plans offered by AT&T and Verizon.

(More customer reviews)I got this antenna for my T-Mobile laptop connect card which has a small port for antennas. Unfortunately when the antenna arrived it did not fit the port as it was supposed to according to the website.
Fortunately for me I was able to modify my data card antenna hole to fit without damaging the card. Once it was in it worked like a charm. I had a very clear boost in signal(don't confuse that with speed).
To clarify a little, I work on the 24th floor of a building and could barely hold on to an Edge connection which is very slow(speed). Once I plugged in the antenna I was able to get a fairly consistent 1-2 bars of 3G. This did change my speed but only because I was able to pick up the higher frequency(3G) which is faster than Edge. Antenna's themselves do not boost signal speed, they boost signal strength. In other words, the 3G signal was to weak to pick up before and the antenna gave me the boost I needed to receive it. I had to clarify because to many people mistake that about antennas.
Eventually, I purchased another larger antenna from this company directly from their website. It was a military grade antenna and holds on to the signal better and now its much more stable.
In any event, these products are great. I also, noticed that the newer antenna had a proper size component for my port.

Cisco DOCSIS 3.0 DPC3000 Cable Modem DPC-3000 Review

(More customer reviews)I've been using the the DPC3000 with Comcast for over 6 months with no problems at all.
FYI, we are Internet users only, we don't have Comcast cable or phone service and we've been leasing the modem because I heard that their were going to be network upgrades and sure enough Comcast rolled out their DOCSIS 3.0 service. The DPC3000 cane as a free swap from Comcast. I called and got it 3 days later (I returned the old one to local Comcast office).
The only problem I encountered was due to my ancient Linksys BEFSR41 wired router. The comm chipset in the Linksys was so old that it wasn't designed for the kind of throughput that was coming down the wire from Comcast and the DPC3000, and it wouldn't sync up any faster than approx 5mbs (though it did work)! Once I replaced it *, I've been bumping along along at approx 18-20mbs. Quite a jump from the 6-8mb I had been getting before and NO cost increase, though it's still not cheap. Since it was installed the DPC3000 has been trouble free. Zero problems.
* FYI: I bought a Netgear N600 WNDR3700 router , which has been performing extremely well.

(More customer reviews)I worked for a small ISP/Telephone Company and this is the modem we installed in every new DSL install we performed. We sold several speeds of DSL over the years from 1.0Mbps to 12Mbps. Once our service hit 3Mbps standard the older modems would die from overheating. These Zoom's never had any issues. Company wide in several thousand installs over three years I had to replace around 6 of these and most of the time the problem was determined to have been a lightening strike. Since leaving the company a couple of years ago, I have used my x6 as a wireless router since all we can get is cable broadband. I disabled the DHCP to allow my cable modem to handle that task and it has worked like a charm and saved me the $50 or so for a stand alone wireless router. Every few months our Wii won't connect and we have to reset the modem. This is most likely a Wii issue since the easiest way to get a new IP assigned to the Wii is to just reset the router. My only issue is now the wireless G technology is outdated by N, but I've never had any issues even with the Wii, a couple of laptops and a Wifi enabled cell phone connected. We even stream Netflix over this thing on a regular basis and never have any issues other than the occasional blip probably on the Netflix side. I'm not sure where all the negative comments come from, but I've had a great experience. To top it off, the last firmware update was in fact October of 2008 and the website is still up.

(More customer reviews)Let's be honest, there isn't much diversity in the market for dsl modems. After trying 2Wire's that have poor network functions, Motorola's that don't stay connected, and Netgear's that fail after 6 months I decided to give this D-Link a try. It came with an install cd which I of course chunked and used the web interface so I can not tell you about the install cd. The web interface has a, "quick setup" menu which avoids a lot of technical network terminology but still had a ton of options in other areas including DHCP and NAT functions so you don't necessarily have to have a separate router to use it with multiple computers. It was very easy to bridge with my existing router (which was the only way I could figure out to get the modem to stop blocking ports and let the other router handle it) and did not have the connection issues Motorola's seem to have with a bridged router handling the login info for your internet service. If you need help configuring it D-Link provides a 800 number inside the box. Overall this modem seems to be well-made, holds a connection well, and performs better than many out-dated models still on the market.

After 4 years of solid service, I replaced this particular RCA DOCSIS 2.0 modem with a new DOCSIS 3.0 modem (a motorola surfboard 6120).
The RCA provided almost 365/24/7 service during those 4 years.
I say "almost" 365/24/7, because I turned it off during extended periods of time away from home, like when I went on vacation and turned off all PC's and the modem.
It's still worked, when I donated it to a a local charity.

Sidenote on the new surfboard 6120: The DOCSIS 3.0 motorola is unbelievable in data transfer rates/speed. I actually MUST turn it off occasionally, otherwise I would exceed the monthly data limit imposed by comcrap. I share several flavors of LINUX in ISO file format, plus some linux based security ISO's like
Backtrack 4 and such. The SB6120 will easily move 10-20 Gig of data every day.

No more $3.00 a month rental fee for me.
After going through 4 "comcast rental" modems in less than a year
(3 motorola surfboards + a terayon) I have had it with
comcrap modems.
Sidenote: comcrap HSI cable modem:
It takes about 3-5 days on average to get back online after a modem dies.
[Comcrap wants to send a tech out to troubleshoot the line, but they want to do it from 1PM to 5PM, the same time that I am at work. It does not work out for me. I'm not taking time off work for someone to troubleshoot what I already KNOW is wrong; the modem.
In a best case scenario, I have to take off work early, to even get into town and just drop off the old modem and pickup a new one].
The RCA modem:
I contacted comcrap to give them my new MAC hardware adderss, for the RCA modem.
It took all of about 15 minutes; to have them enter my mac address into their system and to get me up and running.
I like the modem.
PROS:
1. The INTERNET ON/OFF button saves me from having to toggle my software firewall ON and OFF.
2. software setup is super simple. Device is seen by XP home edition and driver is installed without any problems.
3. The "DAN ELWELL Speed test" seems to be just as fast as my old motorola and/or terayon.
4. the PRICE was right. On 7-8-2006 Radioshack B&M had them for
$29 (regularly 79.99) but WAIT. The price rang up as only
$19.99, NOT the $29.99 on the stoer sign.
Totally Excellent deal.
I bought two. One to use and a spare.
5. Setup/install -one of the fastest and easiest devices to install.
CONS:
1. What happened to RCA's online registration and support?
Concerning these cable modems?
I had a hard time finding the online place to register.
2. Perhaps they (RCA) sold off their cable modem division; who knows.Conclusion:
I like the modem better than either the motorola surfboard or terayon.
I am NOT an online gamer, so I cannot address that issue.
Nor conclude whether the RCA is better or worse for online gaming.

(More customer reviews)When my DSL modem died, I went to the store to discover this hardware combo. What an excellent device to include the 4-port WIRELESS switch/router with the DSL modem! Less hardware, less cables, more simplistic. I have a mixed PC/Mac environment and used the PC for setup since the included CD didn't mention anything about Macs. The install assistant was worthless. It actually just shows you photos of which cables go where, then it makes you restart the PC! There is an extensive .pdf manual on the CD, and if you pop the disc into you Mac, you'll find the English version of it in the "Mac" folder. - Along with with a "Glossary" .pdf and a "Support" .pdf. So while I do wish Zoom included good old fashioned paper versions of these, they did do a good job of including all of this on the CD, but you do have to look!
Luckily, Zoom did include a small sheet of paper showing the IP address, user ID & password needed to access the settings through a web browser. I found the setup to be pretty straight forward and the setup menus are laid out well. The menus are completely different from Linksys, but very easy to navigate. When it was all setup and done, my Mac & PC were talking to each other, but I still wasn't connected to the Internet. After calling SBC/ATT I spoke with a rep who admitted they didn't officially support any modems that aren't sold by ATT, but he took a stab at my settings anyway. It turned out that I needed my full SBC email address as the user ID, not just the first portion. The second I saved the settings, I connected to the internet!
I also found the WEP security settings very easy to setup and a nice strong signal emitting from the X6. Once the device is setup, you can virtually forget about it. I can't speak for this devices longevity yet, but it's nice knowing it has a 2-year warranty.
One thing missing on the back of this unit (like many current routers) is an UPLINK jack to daisy chain this into another router if necessary. Being that this is designed for a home/small office environment, it's probably not a big deal for most users who will never need to upgrade beyond 4 ports.
I think networking gear reviews need to be taken with a grain of salt. Most of us (myself included) are NOT network professionals. Networking computers is considered by many, to be the hardest thing to do in I-T. Since it is a complicated scenario, many people I believe make the mistake of blaming the hardware, when many times, they have incorrect settings or software issues causing them to pull their hair out. Overall, I think networking companies are doing an excellent job making equipment that can now be installed by the average Joe. 10 or 15 years ago, that was unheard of.

(More customer reviews)I bought this from Qwest and wasted at least an hour trying to get it set up to stream to my Xbox 360. It turns out that this device doesn't support multicast, which what the Xbox needs for media streaming, so it's worthless to me. (Do a search for "PK5000 Xbox multicast" to see what I mean.) I've read that other technologies, such as Apple's Bonjour, use multicast as well, so if you intend to use this device for network streaming, look elsewhere. Now I've got to return this to Qwest and find a better modem.
