Motorola WU830G 802.11g 54 Mbps USB 2.0 Adapter Review

Average Reviews:

This is a big 802.11g adapter (about the size of an HP business calculator, and a little thicker), but it gives big performance. It picks up signals better than other wireless adapters, and its long USB cable allows you to place the adapter in the best location for reception. It's great for both laptops and desktops.

Netopia 3386-ENT - Router - ATM, PPP - desktop Review

Netopia 3386-ENT - Router - ATM, PPP - desktop
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We had a firewall crash at the office and decided to replace our old, high-end, Raptor firewall with a Netgear RP614. That router was easy to setup and configure and got us up and running quickly after the firewall crash. However, it was unreliable and tended to suffer from heat exhaustion. During one business day we had to reboot the router 20 times before finally leaving it unplugged overnight so it could cool off and function normally again. We gave up and decided to go with this router.
This router packs the punch of some high end Cisco routers at a fraction of the cost. It is highly configurable, and allows for a variety of complex NAT/PAT setups, port forwarding, packet filters, classless subneting, and more. The manual is very comprehensive. VPN connections do not require any custom software. The e-mail support has been in 24 hours or less.
I have two complaints:
1) The latest firmware does not allow for stable PPTP VPN connections. They suggest rolling back to an old release, which I have not yet tried.
2) The router does not support DNS forwarding. If you have your network setup with static IPs, you will have to add your ISPs DNS servers to the local workstation configurations.
This router is NOT geared towards consumers. Although it does have a setup wizard that makes it easy to configure a basic installation, it is overkill for someone who does not have a good TCP/IP skillset. At this point we've only had it for a week, so I can't be sure that it is more reliable thant the RP614, but so far so good.
UPDATE: With the latest firmware, I have had no issues with maintaining a stable PPTP VPN connection.

NETGEAR FM114P ProSafe 4-Port Wireless Firewall Review

NETGEAR FM114P ProSafe 4-Port Wireless Firewall
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've got quite a lot of experience using the Linksys BEFSR series, Netgear MR314 and now the FM114P broadband routers. Of these, the FM114P wins on just about every front.
In general I liked the Linksys line as they had some useful features, including port mapping and UPnP support, which the Netgear products do not have. On the down side, they also have occasional hang ups and don't do stateful-packet-inspection (SPI). SPI is becoming ever more important with the rise of denial-of-service attacks and port scanning bots.
After a particlarly frustrating week with the Linksys router needing to be reset twice as often as usual, I decided to try the Netgear MR314 (note: the same routing hardware is in all the xx31x models). At first, I was a bit disapppointed at the loss of port forwarding and UPnP support but at least the router was solid (no resets) and the wireless range was excellent. After downloading the latest firmware from Netgear's site I took a look at what else they offer and saw the FM114P model, which I hadn't seen at any local stores. The next morning I took back the 314 and bought the 114 at CDW for the SPI firewall features alone. I was pleasantly suprised that I got a whole lot more for the extra [money] it cost me.
The first thing I noticed is that the 114 is faster, and not just a tiny bit faster but a LOT faster. This suprised me as I didn't think that any router added a significant delay to the packet stream but I immediately noticed the pages loading faster. I can't say that there is a bandwidth increase, but latency is definitely reduced (the lag between clicking on a link and the page starting to load). I assume this is due to the 114's 75mhz processor performing its logging, security checks, and routing processes in significantly less time than the other brands/models's unspecified embedded hardware. In my opinion, using a true onboard processor is the way routing hardware should, and will, be headed in the future.
The 114 also improves on the 314 with a detachable antenna, stateful firewall, built-in print server, better service customization (still no UPnP though) and more security options. This unit is practically perfect for connecting and securing a "broadband attached home network"; with wires or without.

Leviton 47605-28W SMC Structured Media Enclosure with Cover, 28-Inch, White Review

Leviton 47605-28W SMC Structured Media Enclosure with Cover, 28-Inch, White
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Like most others have found in renovating an older home, the myriad of wiring in this house looked like a circus act gone bad. The timing could not have been better when given the opportunity to test the Leviton 47605 Media Box. Here are my thoughts.
Out of the box, I noticed immediately that this unit's interior is prime time 20 gauge steel. The screw mounted cover is 18 gauge steel. Weighing in at 17lbs its not one of those light weight knock offs by any means. It measures in at 29.32"H x 15.62"W x 3.68"D. I like the fact that it can be surface mounted or installed in a recessed cutout. I like the mounted tab feature. The tabs prevent the unit from falling through the studs during installation. There are multiple knockouts on both top and bottom for easy cable routing. The cutout in the base allows for mounting single and double J boxes and power modules.
As others know from working in older properties, installation is not going to be a one and done thing. Its all about location, location and location. Another is having the right tools for the job. The plastic punch down tool that comes with the box isn't going to make the job easier. Besides a drill or saw (depending on your choice of mounting) a wire stripper, plugs, punchdown tool, crimper and cable tester are needed. Once I found the spot, it easily installs with a nice clean fit into the drywall. Running Cat6 lines throughout an older home had its usual hiccups but in the end it was great to have one central organized point of distribution. After all is done, one thing is obvious. This unit is roomy.
If there was an improvement to made on the Leviton 47605 Media Box it would be to option for a hinged cover vice the screw mounted variety. Other then that Leviton is a name to remember when it comes to quality home and office installations. This box will last a lifetime.

Cisco-Linksys BEFN2PE EtherFast Cable/DSL Voice Enabler Review

Cisco-Linksys BEFN2PE EtherFast Cable/DSL Voice Enabler
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
At the time of this review, I just received and set up this product. Here's a quick summary of pros and cons:
Pros:
1. It's got the Linksys look-n-feel, if you know what I mean. Simple, sturdy packaging, stacks well with other Linksys peripherals (I also have their cable/dsl firewall, 10/100 auto switch, and wireless hub), decent instructions, configuration is transparent if you stick to the tried and true, the right set of diagnostic LEDs on the front panel.
2. The product set up was a snap with DHCP enabled. The only snag I ran into is that the ethernet port on the box is a crossover port by default (Ethernet, like many communications standards, has "hub" connections and "client" connections. Crossover connections let clients talk to clients or hubs talk to hubs...). Fixed easy enough by flipping the little "Am I a crossover port" toggle on the back and hitting the reset button (also on the back).
Cons (mostly net2phone):
1. You cannot use your existing net2phone account. There's a special account number assigned specifically for these devices.
2. The rates for these devices are higher than the other net2phone rates.
3. Don't expect to replace your regular telephone with this phone (as indicated in the manual). It does not support important features such as 411, 911, Caller ID, etc.
Recommendations:
1. This is probably the product to get if you want net2phone service but you have either (a) incompatible equipment, (b) are having a hard time getting your audio peripherals set up, (c) you want a cordless set up for use with net2phone (although there are solutions for this from Plantronic, e.g.).
2. Don't get it for cheaper phone service like I did.
Hope this helps!

High Performance 3G/4G Wireless N Router and DLNA Media Server with Bit Torrent download -Wifi IEEE 802.11n up to 300Mbps Video file and data center Network Router Review

High Performance 3G/4G Wireless N Router and DLNA Media Server with Bit Torrent download -Wifi IEEE 802.11n up to 300Mbps Video file and data center Network Router
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Bit torrent is great for sharing stuff. But it consumes too much electricity if your powerful desktop machine just runs the whole day for downloading stuff. So I am looking for something more energy efficient.
I was attracted to the ezdownloader from another maker. But it price tag was a little high and I guess there must be a competitor out there with a better price/feature ratio. So I researched the US Market and then the TW and HK market. There are definitely similar products with much cheaper price. Finally I came to this one - the Sapido 3G N+ Wireless Audio/Video Router.
What this is:
- A wireless router - that serve as any other router out there, you may just hook it up to a DSL/cable modem to get wifi at your home/office.
- A NAT server - you may attach a USB drive to it and access the drive as as SAMBA network drive. The drive can be format to NTFS. I believe the limit is 1.5TB. I am using only a 250GB so it is good enough for me.
- Webcam server - I haven't tested this feature yet. As the spec indicates, you should be able to plug in a webcam and access it from a webpage. It sounds fun, isn't it?
- Finally, the most important factor - A BT downloader. You access this router via a webpage interface, upload the .torrent file, and it will download the contents for you! It allows a list of 20 torrents, with 2 active download running. Unlike the ezdownloader, where you must use the vendor's website to control the download, this router will be access from the LAN only. Depends on how your LAN gateway is set up, you can assign this router as your Web server at your current IP. If you do that, then you may access the router from outside (anywhere over the world).
The set up was not straight forward for non-geeky users. But just be patient and you should be done in 30 minutes. There is no manual provided - only a big folded piece of the instruction paper with diagrams. Since my broadband gateway is already wireless, I use this a wireless Access Point. Yes, you can use this a wireless "client" to your existing wireless network. Then itself can be used as a wired + wireless access point. There are four ethernet ports available to use. I hook my PS3 and XBOX to it and it works great!
The samba network drive can be detected by the PS3 automatically. I am able to watch the movies directly from the PS3 without doing anything extra.
The Pros:
- A lot of feature to play with.
- Wireless AP (the 3G network feature is not tested, but could be a big plus to someone)
- Support BT
- Support Samba
- Upgradable firmware
- Web access from outsideThe Cons:
- BT page not compatible completely with all web-browsers. It likes Firefox and IE more.
- Can't handle Asian character sets - all characters of the downloading file name will be converted to hex byte representation of the character. It makes reading back of the file name difficult sometimes. Not a problem if the file was created before hand and copied to the USB drive.
- The saved path sometimes can not be handled by Windows explorer, if you plug the USB drive to your PC. However, you may use a ftp client to ftp to the router and access the drive to rename the files before moving back to Windows.
=> It definitely can do some improvement on the file system.
Conclusion: overall this product is great product of integrated features. However, I did spend some effort finding it. I think the sales department from Sapido should promote it a little better so a bigger consumer crowd can see its availability.

USB to USB Mode 34mm ExpressCard Host Adapter for 3G AirCard ExpressCard ATandT Cingular Sprint Verizon Kyocera Marlin Novatel Sierra Wireless, NOT for PCMCIA PC card 54mm
Average Reviews:

Bought this adapter for my Verizon Novatel PC770 modem, because my new Laptop did not have a PCMCIA or Expresscard slot.
Before I got the adapter, on my old laptop I never got more than 3 bars of signal, even with an external antenna hooked up. Now with the cable connected to the USB port, I get 5 bars of signal, which equals a higher data rate. It works so well, I'd recommend everyone buys it, even if you have PCMCIA/Expresscard slots, just for the signal improvement.
Note that the adapter only works with a modem that uses the USB mode of the Expresscard/PCMCIA interface. Problem is that no-one tells you how the card works. Guess the PC770 works via the USB mode because this adapter works perfectly.

NOTE: The DEVICE WILL NOT WORK WITH any ExpressCard using the PCI Express (PCIe) portion of the ExpressCard standard. This is the majority of ExpressCards that do any other than the devices discussed above. Any real host adapter for SATA, FireWire, Ethernet, USB 2.0, etc. WILL NOT WORK WITH the EXP-USB USB 2.0 to USB 2.0 Mode ExpressCard 34 / 54 Host Adapter. The EXP-USB USB 2.0 to USB 2.0 Mode ExpressCard Adapter allows use of USB based ExpressCards with USB 2.0 equipped computers. Use with 300mA USB 2.0 ports is not recommended and may not provide sufficient current for certain ExpressCard applications. Using USB 2.0 technology, the device supports high speed applications including HSDPA and HSUPA ExpressCards. 1PORT Docsis 2.0 Cable Hwic Review

1PORT Docsis 2.0 Cable Hwic
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
UPDATED 10-13-2009. Please see: [...] for information on how to get this device working with Comcast as your Internet Service Provider.
The review below is based on my dealings with Comcast in July of 2009 when I first purchased the unit. What can I say? It would be a beautiful thing if this HWIC in my 1841 router was supported by Comcast. I could then consolidate the modem, router and switch into a nice 1U rack-mountable device that would fit perfectly into a small network cabinet in the basement.
I made some progress with Comcast. At one point cable-modem0/0/0 was pulling a DHCP address and after getting the device configured via CLI I got a workstation out to Comcast's walled garden. I was unable to get it to activate...I should have called Comcast at that point but I messed around, erased my config, rebuilt the config...spent countless hours on the phone with Comcast trying to get the HFC Mac address of the modem squared away.
Most recently, I was informed by Comcast that the HFC Mac address of the cisco hwic-modem is showing as a LEASED modem in their system...and apparently I am going to be charged for having posession of 2 leased modems at the same time until I resolve it at my local Comcast office.
In any case. Oh sorry, this is supposed to be a Cisco HWIC-Cable-Modem-D-2 review. =) I was actually a little surprised at the lack of end-user documentation for this device. Typically Cisco has a plethora of configuration examples to get a base configuration on any given device. From the limited experience I've had with the HWIC, it appears to function no differently than a typical Ethernet or FastEthernet interface when being addressed from CLI. With DOCSIS, the ISP should be providing some sort of configuration to the device through magic or whatever.
The limited information I found online through forums and discussions have stated that the HWIC-Cable-Modem-D-2 is rock solid, fewer errors than consumer-grade modems, fewer dropouts, more reliable and robust.
I just caution anyone purchasing this item in hopes of using it with Comcast as an ISP. I had no problems getting a technician to enter the HFC Mac address in on their end...but I've had nothing but problems since.

Most situations can be covered with the Windows-based installation tool. You'll need all the pertinent info from your provider (IP address, gateway address, DNS address, netmask, etc.), but with this in-hand, the graphical installer makes it easy.
More advanced needs, and people who frequently play online multi-user games, will need more expertise to use the RT311. Advanced configurations can only be made by telnetting to the box itself, or by connecting a serial cable and using a terminal program. This won't be an easy task for average users, and while the manual is well-written and thorough, it can't (and doesn't) train newbies on the basics; some level of skill is assumed.
Its "firewall" security is centered around NAT (network address translation), which does afford some level of security for your network. (It's also what makes connection sharing work.) In short, private IP addresses are assigned to PCs on your network, and the RT311 remaps connections to a single public IP address assigned by your provider. In this way, your PC is not directly accessible from the outside world, since by default, unsolicited incoming TCP/IP connections are denied access to the network. That's fine, but for real security, look to a SonicWall or something more advanced. The RT311 won't likely do much for certain types of hacker attacks, like Denial of Service (DoS), "ping of death," IP spoofing, and the like, which some more sophisticated solutions do address.
NAT also causes problems for some applications. For example, IRC will be tough to use, because most IRC servers require IDENT, and IDENT requests won't pass through the device to your desktop. Dialpad.com, Napster uploads to other users, and a variety of other applications will not work in the RT311's default configuration. You'll need to configure "SUA" for this (i.e., port remapping), but again, that requires telnet or a terminal program, and non-technical users will likely find this a challenge (at least at first).
In addition, your port remapping capabilities are limited. You have your choice of remapping everything to a particular machine on the network (not a good idea, and defeats all firewall security, so use it temporarily and sparingly), or mapping selected ports by number. But you can configure a maximum of only six (6) of those, which may not be enough for power users or networks with many users and applications. (The D-Link and Linksys solutions that compete with the RT311 offer just slightly more flexibility here.)
Using a hardware solution like the RT311 is, in my experience, far better and more reliable than software-based solutions like WinProxy. (But of course, WinProxy offers web caching, content filtering, and other features that the RT311 and its competitors do not. But I favor the reliability of a dedicated piece of hardware to loading down my PC with yet another task.)
Otherwise, the unit does as advertised. It's economical, well supported, well warranted, and well built. Its manual, which is supplied electronically, is as good as they come. And most everything you'll need is in the box (including the basic required cables).
One final note: Be aware that this is a real, Ethernet-based solution. You'll need a 10-Base-T or 100-Base-T local area network (LAN), including hubs or switches as needed, and your DSL or cable modem will also need 10-Base-T Ethernet for hook-up. (This box is not really the right choice for sharing dial-up or ISDN connections.)

Best Data CMX300 SmartOne Cable Modem Review

Best Data CMX300 SmartOne Cable Modem

I have actually had a CMX300 for some time - probably about 5 years or so. For a reason I forget now, I bought a Motorola SB5120 about two years ago and it seemed a little faster so I put the Best Data on the shelf. A little over a year ago, Time Warner (Roadrunner) replaced Comcast in my area, and I began having intermittent connectivity problems. Naturally I blamed Time Warner. I had to reset the cable modem sometimes 10 times a week. Well, recently, my service went completely out and was out for several days while I waited for Time Warner to come figure out what the problem was. I don't know what made me want to try the old Best Data modem, but I figured "what the heck" and plugged it in. Wouldn't you know, it worked, I called Time Warner with the "new" MAC address, and here I am writing this review. The old standby to the rescue. I may at some point replace the CMX300 again, but I think I'll continue to hold onto it for its reliability and the fact that it has never let me down completely like the Motorola did.

Motorola SB4101 SURFboard Cable Modem Review

Motorola SB4101 SURFboard Cable Modem

A few years back, I got one of these modems for free as part of a deal when signing up for cable internet. It only lasted a few months before it started crapping out and losing its connection. Sometimes the connection was slower than dial-up even when the modem showed a good connection. I ended up buying a Linksys modem/router combined unit and it worked great.
