NETGEAR FM114P ProSafe 4-Port Wireless Firewall Review

(More customer reviews)I've got quite a lot of experience using the Linksys BEFSR series, Netgear MR314 and now the FM114P broadband routers. Of these, the FM114P wins on just about every front.
In general I liked the Linksys line as they had some useful features, including port mapping and UPnP support, which the Netgear products do not have. On the down side, they also have occasional hang ups and don't do stateful-packet-inspection (SPI). SPI is becoming ever more important with the rise of denial-of-service attacks and port scanning bots.
After a particlarly frustrating week with the Linksys router needing to be reset twice as often as usual, I decided to try the Netgear MR314 (note: the same routing hardware is in all the xx31x models). At first, I was a bit disapppointed at the loss of port forwarding and UPnP support but at least the router was solid (no resets) and the wireless range was excellent. After downloading the latest firmware from Netgear's site I took a look at what else they offer and saw the FM114P model, which I hadn't seen at any local stores. The next morning I took back the 314 and bought the 114 at CDW for the SPI firewall features alone. I was pleasantly suprised that I got a whole lot more for the extra [money] it cost me.
The first thing I noticed is that the 114 is faster, and not just a tiny bit faster but a LOT faster. This suprised me as I didn't think that any router added a significant delay to the packet stream but I immediately noticed the pages loading faster. I can't say that there is a bandwidth increase, but latency is definitely reduced (the lag between clicking on a link and the page starting to load). I assume this is due to the 114's 75mhz processor performing its logging, security checks, and routing processes in significantly less time than the other brands/models's unspecified embedded hardware. In my opinion, using a true onboard processor is the way routing hardware should, and will, be headed in the future.
The 114 also improves on the 314 with a detachable antenna, stateful firewall, built-in print server, better service customization (still no UPnP though) and more security options. This unit is practically perfect for connecting and securing a "broadband attached home network"; with wires or without.

Cisco-Linksys BEFN2PE EtherFast Cable/DSL Voice Enabler Review

(More customer reviews)At the time of this review, I just received and set up this product. Here's a quick summary of pros and cons:
Pros:
1. It's got the Linksys look-n-feel, if you know what I mean. Simple, sturdy packaging, stacks well with other Linksys peripherals (I also have their cable/dsl firewall, 10/100 auto switch, and wireless hub), decent instructions, configuration is transparent if you stick to the tried and true, the right set of diagnostic LEDs on the front panel.
2. The product set up was a snap with DHCP enabled. The only snag I ran into is that the ethernet port on the box is a crossover port by default (Ethernet, like many communications standards, has "hub" connections and "client" connections. Crossover connections let clients talk to clients or hubs talk to hubs...). Fixed easy enough by flipping the little "Am I a crossover port" toggle on the back and hitting the reset button (also on the back).
Cons (mostly net2phone):
1. You cannot use your existing net2phone account. There's a special account number assigned specifically for these devices.
2. The rates for these devices are higher than the other net2phone rates.
3. Don't expect to replace your regular telephone with this phone (as indicated in the manual). It does not support important features such as 411, 911, Caller ID, etc.
Recommendations:
1. This is probably the product to get if you want net2phone service but you have either (a) incompatible equipment, (b) are having a hard time getting your audio peripherals set up, (c) you want a cordless set up for use with net2phone (although there are solutions for this from Plantronic, e.g.).
2. Don't get it for cheaper phone service like I did.

(More customer reviews)Bought this adapter for my Verizon Novatel PC770 modem, because my new Laptop did not have a PCMCIA or Expresscard slot.
Before I got the adapter, on my old laptop I never got more than 3 bars of signal, even with an external antenna hooked up. Now with the cable connected to the USB port, I get 5 bars of signal, which equals a higher data rate. It works so well, I'd recommend everyone buys it, even if you have PCMCIA/Expresscard slots, just for the signal improvement.
Note that the adapter only works with a modem that uses the USB mode of the Expresscard/PCMCIA interface. Problem is that no-one tells you how the card works. Guess the PC770 works via the USB mode because this adapter works perfectly.

Reason for me buying such a short cable is I don't like wires dangling around and don't like wireless as I have a switch connected to my router. (More customer reviews)Purchased this device in August 2010. 4G service is limited in the areas I travel to frequently (Austin, TX, Pasadena,CA, Denver, CO). Device would also lock up frequently when shutting down. The only waya to turn it off would be to remove the battery. Now in April 2011, after 9 months of use, it lost its ability to get an IP address and thus could not connect to the internet. The device was never dropped, it powered up and connected to the cellular network. I took several calls to Sprint customer service and long wait times on hold before they directed me to a local Sprint store where I had the most frustrating customer service experience of my life. They literally laughed at me that I didn't purchase "insurance" and said that the unit would require replacement. I chose to terminate my contract instead. I'll never do business with Sprint again.

I failed to follow proper protocol and notify the seller first. Apparently my purchased had disappeared into the bowels of the USPS. Which was quickly and bitingly brought to my attention by the seller. Ouch! I quickly removed my review but I'm sure some of you saw it. My ethernet cable finally arrived a week late but no worst for wear. I hooked it up and it worked fine. Lesson learned and I hope picked up by all. Now for my letter to USPS.
