(More customer reviews)I recently bought and installed this SMC router to replace by older SMC Router that had given up the ghost, after 4 years. The average lifetime of comparable home routers is about 2-3 years. Reliability,outstanding technical support, plus a USB Printer connection were the main reasons I bought this thing. I have tried Linksys and D Link routers and took them back. There are cheaper products out there but... you get what you pay for.
Installation went well. I had a few connection problems but the Technical Support Staff got me straightened out. The new installation wizard for the USB printer works just fine. The printer must first be connected directly to and installed on each individual computer that is going to be on your network, then connected to the router via the USB port. It's a driver thing.
Some things to bear in mind. If your are networking a desktop and a laptop and expecting to get 300 Mbps you will need a Network Card or an Adaptor Card capable of 10/100/1000 Mbps in each computer. If you decide to go with a wired network and connect the laptop to the router, in addition to the desktop, insure you use at least a CAT 6 Network Cable, capable of supporting a 10/100/1000 Base T-network. If your network port leads to an internal 10/100 Mbps card or device, then that's all you are going to get. Finally, insure to separate the location of the router away from your DSL Broadband Modem by at least a few feet. The SMC Router, with the WLAN Switch On will transmit a signal that will interfere with the modem and create problems with certain internet sites.

U.S. Robotics USR8022 Wireless Cable/DSL Router (22 Mbps) Review

(More customer reviews)I have been using this router over a month now and it has not given me one single problem in terms of network connection. The wireless range is far much better than the SMC Barricade 7004AWBR. I initially bought the SMC 7004AWBR because it has been out on the market much longer and most people have given thumbs up to it. But it literally keeps locking up on me when I tried to transfer a 120MB file from one computer to another over the wired connection. The U.S. Robotics, however, never gave me one single problem. The setup was fast and painless (like 10 minutes or so) and everything just work.
The only slight issue I have with this router is that the printer server does not behave as I expected. If I turn the printer off, the admin screen will show "Device Printer" error and sometimes I have to reset the router. Also, the router only comes with only 2 wired LAN connection, whereas most other ones come with either 3 or 4.

TRENDnet 14dBi Outdoor High Gain Directional Antenna TEW-AO14D Review

(More customer reviews)I recently purchased this to increase the wireless signal within a 2-story building that has numerous walls in between the modem on the second floor and the computers on the first floor. With this antenna, I'm able to boost the wireless signal from about 50% to about 65% as long as the antenna is pointed at exactly the right location. A few degrees up/down/left/right will tend to decrease the amount of signal by a few percent.
When I further compared this device to the Super Cantenna (rated at 12dbi) WIRELESS GARDEN SCB03 Cantenna Wireless Network Booster, this antenna clearly performs better. However, when this antenna is compared to the Hawking HAI17MD Hawking HiGain Directional Antenna, mini indoor, 7dBi - HAI7MD, the difference is minimal. Pairing this antenna with a Hawking HSB2 Hawking HiGain Signal Booster version 2 - HSB2, I was able to receive 100% signal which surprisingly even outperformed our commercial grade D-Link 7700AP access point (the D-Link typically provided about 70-75% signal without any enhancements or boosters).
All in all, a cheap antenna that does work (although perhaps not as well as one would expect from something with 14db gain) but requires exact placement and a booster to really make it shine.
Note: You may need additional cables/connectors to hook this antenna up to your network. You will probably need at least an N-Type male to Reverse SMA Female connector (which you can get from the Trendnet Outdoor Arrestor Kit) TRENDnet Outdoor Arrestor Kit (Includes Reverse SMA to N-Type Converter) and if necessary, an antenna extension cable TRENDnet N-Type to N-Type Cable / 6M (19.7t.) or LMR400 N-type cable equivalent (try eBay).

While the installation was very easy, and it works, it constantly needs to be reset. As a result of constantly resetting it, I've had to call tech support to get help on how to fix it (security settings, resetting the router thoroughtly, etc). They've been helpful both times I've called, but it's irritating that I have to call at all. If I can get the thing up and running (for months, mind you), why can't it STAY up and running??? Oh, and I've never gotten the print server to work. I had very little interest in it doing so, so I didn't try too hard.

Netgear RT314 Internet Access Router Review

(More customer reviews)First, a note on switches vs hubs. A hub shares the bandwith between connected devices. So, if you have one computer going through the hub to the internet and a second connecting to a third over the lan for a file transfer, they have at most 100mbs total between them. A switch actually routes a dedicated connection for each pair of communicating devices so that they can communicate at full bandwidth. If you've already got a switch, you might want to consider the somewhat less expensive RT311 which is the router/firewall without the switch. If you have a hub, on the other hand, I'd suggest going with the 314 instead, the hub can still be used to allow your network to grow beyond 4 devices (after all, two computers, a laptop and a network printer and you're tapped out with the 314 on its own).
Anyway, this is a great device. I pulled it out of the box, plugged in the wires and everything worked immediately. I'm sharing cable internet between a windows 2000 box and PowerMac (running OS9 and DAVE 2.5) with no problems at all.
It's 4 stars because the web interface is really quite useless. To properly configure this device (including the very cool dynamic dns capabilities) you need to telnet to the box. Not a *big* deal, but still a minor nuisance. There's no reason the web interface couldn't handle these other configuration options as well.
I had considered the Linksys box which is very similar in capabilities, but searching usenet archives revealed that the netgear is a much more reliable device.

TRENDnet 4-Port Gigabit Firewall Router TWG-BRF114 (Black) Review

(More customer reviews)At first install, speeds were capped well below my ISP's capacity. After upgrading the firmware (which can ONLY be done using I.E. since their code is not compatible with Firefox yeah, major yellow flag!) to v1.0 Revision 04 the speeds were acceptable, however the router disconnects if idle and for some reason you cannot turn that feature off. It also does not return ping requests, there is a serious bug in the firmware that tech support could not overcome after over an hour on the phone and 3 different techs.
Also there is no way to save the original Revision 02 firmware, and they don't host it on their site so it can't be downloaded. Once you upgrade the firmware (as their tech support insists!) there is no way to go back! Their top tier tech support never called back like they said they would. 24/7 tech support my A$$!
The NAT implementation is horrible, it does let you open port ranges manually but cannot forward them to a specific host on your network without jumping through hoops and creating a "virtual server" why can't they just do like everybody else does?
Also you cannot delete or edit "default services" that they bind to certain ports, what if you want to use that port for another application?
Overall, save yourself the trouble and jog on over to Radio Shack and get something that works, something you can take back within a few minutes rather than have to get an RMA, ship the item, wait for credit, yada yada.

I also have a TREDNnet wireless n gaming adapter and it's been fantastic so far. Anyways, this router runs cool even though I've been using multiple connections at the same time and using tons of traffic. My PC shows that I average 250Mbps and I see it peak at 300 constantly so the speed is as advertised. I have it running in mixed mode. It only took about 10 minutes to set the router up out of the box. Once I plugged in my cable modem and my pc it automatically configured the connection and I just had to log in and configure the wireless portion and security. In the 10 minutes I also configured my DDNS and my wireless IP Cameras to work with the router. It's a super easy interface.....pretty much the same as any other router you can buy. When saving settings the reboot only took a few seconds and always went back into the setup. Most routers clunk out and you have to reset and log back in manually. I could go on and on but to keep this short I'd have to say that this router is awesome and it does EXACTLY as advertised. I've used most of the major brands of routers and I can't say much for most. It's very difficult to find a good reliable product but I think I've gotten lucky with this one. Don't believe hype or buy something because you've heard the name before. The only other router I've ever been happy with was a Viewsonic believe it or not. That thing was rock solid and never gave me a single problem. If anything changes I will post it....otherwise you can count on this router. I love how people here are claiming they have advanced knowledge but can't set this router up. It's really very very simple just follow the quick setup in the manual.
*UPDATE 1/17/10*
Still no reset needed! I've been using tons of data with multiple devices. As a matter of fact Netflix is streaming to my living room right now. I have a torrent downloading on this pc @ 500kB/s and there are no hiccups. Just solid lightning fast connections!
*UPDATE 3/14/10*
Still no reset needed. I'm running in Mixed Mode and you MUST run 20/40 on the Bandwidth to get full speed. That must be the problem with others but this is standard with any N router.

TRENDnet 54 Mbps Wireless G Broadband Router TEW-432BRP (Blue) Review

(More customer reviews)Upgrading finally from my B router. Probably the last one in the neighborhood to do so.
There are three versions of the TEW-432BRP (the outer casings look slightly different). They're roughly labelled A, B, and C. I wound up with the C one. Its the best G router i've ever seen, for a few reasons:
1. "Easy CD" actually worked and led me through a wizard that had me running in under 5 minutes. It was even intelligent enough to figure out that my cable company's router needed a reset.
2. When you go into the firmware, there are some interesting and unusual settings you can tweak. It has the usual things like 'dont broadcast ssid' and all the rest of it. But it also had unusual settings that I'd never seen before, like the ability to set the output of its signal at "full power" or "half power" or "quarter" or "eigth" or "minimum". Seemed like an interesting option; I usually sit 10 feet from it, maybe I can reduce the microwaves bombarding my brain? I tried it on the various levels and did throughput tests. Interestingly, it was at "quarter power" that I had the fastest throughput. I dont know why, but I can live with that. I was glad to have that option to reduce the output signal's power level in the router, though.
3. Excellent transmission spread, strong signal, and fast. I know the bottleneck is supposed to be the dsl/cable conneciton itself, but I would swear my browsing is faster and snappier now. And my connection speed to my local network drive improved five-fold (which was why I got a g router in the first place).
Its a great deal under twenty-five on sale.

TRENDnet 4-Port Broadband Router TW100-S4W1CA (Blue) Review

(More customer reviews)I bought this Trendnet to replace an old Netgear router, which was still working fine, except it couldn't keep Outlook connected to its remote Exchange server. I suspected that the old router was too slow to handle the RPC over http (Exchange Proxy) connection that Outlook uses, but I wasn't sure. So I was looking for a new and ultra-low-cost router to see if it would fix the problem. This router solved the problem immediately - in fact Outlook connects faster from home now than it does at the office.
This router was easy to install and set up. At first I was reluctant to switch brands because I was already familiar with configuring Netgear routers (I also have a Netgear wireless router configured as an access point.) But I didn't have any trouble navigating the admin screens for the Trendnet. I connected my Netgear wireless router to one port of the Trendnet as a wireless access point and it works perfectly.
(Why two routers? My home office with its several computers is located at a corner of the house - a poor location for the wireless router. So the Trendnet router stays in the office. A cable runs from the Trendnet to a centrally located closet, where the Netgear wireless router lives. Some special configuration of the routers is required for this setup - it's explained on the Netgear web site.)
My only complaint about the Trendnet is the red flashing status light. According to the documentation that came with my router this light was supposed to be green, so I was trying to figure out what problem was causing it to flash red. Eventually I discovered that "OK" is now flashing red, not green. Personally I'd prefer a green light for OK - the flashing red can be distracting.
I hope that this router will prove as reliable as my Netgear routers have been.
