Internet signal is a digital signal with a designated IP (Internet Protocol) address. Each Network device has to have a unique IP address and a DHCP server to releases that IP address. This device only splits the signal. It dose not assign IP addresses or act as a DHCP server.

(More customer reviews)This device allows you to COMBINE 2 ethernet ports from a switch/hub/router into 1 cable and to SPLIT the cable back out to 2 ports for use with computers or other ethernet devices.
A typical ethernet CAT5 cable has 8 wires in it; and for 10/100 ethernet networks you only use 4 of those 8 wires. Therefore you can use the other unused 4 wires to run another ethernet segment.
In order to use this product properly you have to connect 2 ports from your switch/hub/router. Then a regular CAT5 ethernet cable to wherever you need to go and put ANOTHER one of these on the end to split the signal back out.
Typical use:
PROBLEM: You have 1 ethernet cable connecting to a computer (for example) and you need to add another computer or other device. You do not want to run another ethernet cable.
SOLUTION: Install one of these on both sides of the ethernet cable. 1) At the source of your ethernet network (where your router/switch/hub is); remove the existing ethernet cable; then take two empty ports and plug them into the 2 ports side of this device. Then plug the ethernet cable that you just unplugged into the single port side of this device. 2) At the end where the computer is, remove the ethernet cable from the computer; and plug it into the single port side of this device. Then connect your computer and the additional device to the two port side of this device.
(It does not matter which port of this device you plug your computer/additional device into).
In closing ... You MUST combine 2 ethernet ports from your switch to make this work. I see reviews all the time from people who do not know how this works and they give bad reviews because it won't work for them.

(More customer reviews)This cable is great and was much more cost effective than outdoor Cat6 cable. I wired 2 rooms of my house and much of the cable is running outside of the house with many bends. There were NO data issues at all. I primed and painted all cable that is outside exposed to the sun so that the sunlight doesn't ruin the cable which is not certified for outdoor use. So far it's been fine in 20-90 degree weather and I don't foresee any issues ever now that it's painted.
I only run a 100mb network with very heavy video loads from my HTPC to my XBOX in another room, and I am AMAZED how well my newly wired house network performs now. I cut this cable into 40' runs and wired 2 rooms to the room with the cable modem using wall keystones at all connections. Everything worked perfectly and I now have a fully wired ethernet house that looks great. I can't tell you how nice it is and the video quality from the PC to the XBOX is far superior to wireless. Goodbye data loss, I love this cable and the price was great.
I can't wait to use this cable with a gigabit network but gigabit routers aren't cheap enough yet and I haven't hit a bottleneck yet with the 100mb network with even with current heavy use.

Wanted to connect my modem to my new D-Link Ethernet switch, (that sit side by side) and the shortest cable I had was 6ft. Saw this 1ft cable, for next to nothing, ordered it and it was here in a soft pack in my mailbox in seven days. Total cost $3.03. I'll take that.
FYI, I read some complaints about it not being actually one foot in length, so I measured, it is 10 inches, not including the plugs.
If you want a close connect ethernet cable, this is your boy.
