D-Link DGS-1005D 5-Port 10/100/1000 Gigabit Switch, Desktop Review

D-Link DGS-1005D 5-Port 10/100/1000 Gigabit Switch, Desktop

I had been using the older 10/100 D-Link switch (DSS-5+) for over two years and never had any kind of problem. About three weeks ago, I wrote a review of that switch here and mentioned that I'd like to try the Gigabit version (this one). After thinking about it for a bit, and realizing how inexpensive these things are, I went out and bought it. Exactly as I said for the DSS-5+, this is a great little switch that's definitely worth the money. All the ports are in the back, the casing has a brushed aluminum look, and it's fanless. So, it's definitely possible to leave it sitting on the desk. Since the "switching fabric" supports 10Gb/sec, that means each of the five ports can carry their full 2Gb/sec (1Gb/sec each way) capacity without problem. The darn thing doesn't even get warm. Definitely a good buy (I rate it at 5 stars out of 5).
Darn near every computer sold these days has a Gigabit Ethernet connection built into it. So, assuming you have the proper cabling (Cat 5e or Cat 6), using a Gigabit switch should let you take advantage of the added speed on your local network. However, it won't make any difference across the Internet since only a rare few cable modem even connect at 100Mb/sec and, as far as I know, none connect at 1 GB/sec.

Netgear DS106 6-Port 10/100 Dual Speed Hub with Uplink Button Review

Netgear DS106 6-Port 10/100 Dual Speed Hub with Uplink Button
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
An earlier review stated "this hub only appears to provide half-duplex support".This is part of the definition of a hub vs a switch, thus the product is not flawed. A switch will provide full duplex and is more appropriate for multiple high bandwidth devices. If you're attempting to decide HUB vs SWITCH, do a google search before you buy.
I have been a fan of Netgear products since they were originally under BayNetworks. They make high quality devices, attractive design, and they normally offer long warranties. This product is no different. I've had it serving up a couple of machines now for over a year without incident. It's remained on 24 hours / 365 days and performs nicely.
The only downside I've seen with Netgear is their on going support (Firmware upgrades, etc.). Obvisouly that won't be an issue with this device, but something to consider if your also looking at them to provide a router solution. Also, the power adaptors seem to go a little too often.
All and all, this is a great hub and wonderful price. I can think of no reason for some who needs a hub to not pick this up.

The Netgear DS100 series of 10/100 Mbps dual-speed hubs connects multiple PCs to share printers, files, Internet access, and e-mail communications. One can mix and match 10 and 100 Mbps PCs, servers, and peripherals with these hubs, all without any configuration required. The DS100 family combines many capabilities in little space, and the units are designed for price-conscious small-business owners. One can connect 10 or 100 Mbps network devices to the hub. Each port individually senses and adjusts to run at the proper speed.
Each unit has a built-in self-learning bridge that provides the communications link between the 10 and 100 Mbps network devices. The intelligent bridge automatically manages network traffic so that 10 Mbps traffic and 100 Mbps traffic do not crowd each other's segments.

Wired Home TLNS RJ45 Two Line Network Splitter Pair Review

Wired Home TLNS RJ45 Two Line Network Splitter Pair
Average Reviews:

You can't use this product to split the Internet line to connect two separate devices. What you are looking for is a Router or a Switch. Internet signal is a digital signal with a designated IP (Internet Protocol) address. Each Network device has to have a unique IP address and a DHCP server to releases that IP address. This device only splits the signal. It dose not assign IP addresses or act as a DHCP server.

More electronics are internet-enabled than ever before-gaming consoles, satellite receivers, televisions, and DVRs offer even more features when connected to the internet, and require a unique IP address and network connection for use when connected to a router. Most Base 10/100 Ethernet networks installed in homes require only two pairs of conductors for operation, allowing two different network connections over one Category cable. Wired Home network line splitter/combiners take advantage of this and enable two network connections be made over a single cable, effectively doubling the amount of network connections possible in your installation without re-running cable. Each network splitter/combiner features RJ45 input/output ports, and a cabled RJ45 output plug. System labeling placards and connection insert identifiers are included.

NETGEAR GSM7324 24-Port Layer 3 Switch Review

NETGEAR GSM7324 24-Port Layer 3 Switch
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I used to hate network uptime. When the LAN was up for more than a few days at a time, I would get angry and punchy.
That has all changed, friends.
Now that I have the Netgear GSM7324, I don't have to worry about the network being up for too long; it automatically kills the LAN on it's own.
The best part is, it is totally unpredictable, so each time my users yell "Hey, I can't get to wiki" or "Is there something wrong with the Internet?", it's like a special surprise for everybody.
I mean really, do you really _need_ access to your gateway while trying to commit CVS at the end of the day? And who wants to be able to read email while at work? It's much better to pay a bunch of software engineers and marketing consultants to sit idle while the IT guy is power cycling all the switches on the network trying to clear up whatever happy fun issue is taking down LAGs and VLANs one by one.
Sure, I could have bought a Cisco, but that drab bluegreygreen color totally clashes with my server room. Also, there is my hatred of a stable network to consider.
I'm sure if I was just using this switch to do simple layer 2 stuff my LAN would stay up longer, but since I wanted to actually break the network as fast as ARP'ingly possible, I made sure to turn on some of the features Netgear claims this box can support.
I would have given this unit a higher rating, but sometimes my network is up for nearly half a week before it dies. That's nearly two and one half days without my users sitting idle while I troubleshoot, or going home early because they can't get anything done at work.
One last advantage of using this Netgear "layer 3 switch" is their superb support team. I used to have to sit on the phone with other company's support staff, getting answers to my questions, or offers to VPN in to take a look at the situation. Now, I am all smiles as I get the same exact say statement each time I call support.
I don't have to worry anymore about getting help with the problem from a qualified network engineer type.
Could you pass the Dosas?

NETGEAR GS108 ProSafe 8-Port Gigabit Ethernet Desktop Switch Review

NETGEAR GS108 ProSafe 8-Port Gigabit Ethernet Desktop Switch
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This switch is exactly what I expected it to be: solid. Just like the other Netgear equipment I've used, the GS108 is completely hassle-free. My whole house was literally wired for gigabit Ethernet in no more time than it took to plug in the cables. I took it out of the box, plugged in the power cord, and plugged in connections (including a router and the patch cables to the rooms in my home), and went about my networking. It's completely idiot-proof, since all 8 ports automatically detect connection speed and uplink/downlink (meaning that no special cables are needed to hook up additional switches or routers). Plus, the indicator lights show which ports are in use, and at what speeds (10Mb, 100Mb, or 1Gb).
The form factor is great, too: At about 9 inches wide by 4 inches deep by 1 inch thick, it's small enough that I was easily able to place it inside the structured wiring panel, and so light that a little heavy velcro holds it fast. Plus, it doesn't put out a lot of heat; even with the door to the panel closed, it feels warm but never hot to the touch.

Cables To Go 31344 Cat6 550 MHz Snagless Patch Cable, Green (5 Feet) Review

Cables To Go 31344 Cat6 550 MHz Snagless Patch Cable, Green (5 Feet)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Beware buying this product from the vendor "Citi Electronics." They shipped me generic no-name brand cables, instead of the unique Cables-To-Go snagless custom boots. The "generics" are like typical Ethernet cables with the thick molded boot that fully encapsulates the plastic tab used to unlock the cable from a jack. I've found trying to press on this thick "thumb bump" boot to push on the tab difficult to use and sometimes I have to pull the boot back in order to press directly on the tab to properly disengage it. It seems these generic boots are just too large and may actually be pressed up against the jack housing causing tension on the jack and making disengagement harder (hence my need to peel back the boot or forcibly push the cable further into the jack to unload the tension on the tab).
Which is why I now use the Cables-To-Go snagless versions as it uses a light and small vinyl flap that rests on the plastic locking tab to aid in disengaging yet allows easy unobstructed view and access to this tab to ensure you are properly disengaging it without adding any stress or tension to the connection.
