Dell TrueMobile 2300 Wireless Broadband Router, Model WX-5565D Review

I bought that router because the cable modem from Comcast is crap, so I need a router to share the internet connection with other computers at home.
I am so glad that router is cheap because it's not an newest model, but it works well. It's not 802.11n but it's enough for me at this moment.

Cisco-Linksys BEFN2PS4 EtherFast Cable/DSL Voice Router Review

Cisco-Linksys BEFN2PS4 EtherFast Cable/DSL Voice Router
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've got 2 10baseT computers on a separate hub, connected to the Uplink port of the Linksys, then 1 100baseT laptop and a 10baseT desktop connected directly to the Linksys. The Linksys is connected to the cable modem, and all 4 computers have high speed internet access. I also have a telephone connected to the Linksys, which gives me cheap net2phone calls over the internet, with no computer involved. Everything works great, but to get net2phone to work I had to set the Linksys to use the static IP the cable company gave me to connect to the internet, rather than allowing the cable company to randomly assign the Linksys an IP with DHCP. But all my computers on the network are randomly assigned IPs by the Linksys, since the Linksys is also a DHCP server.

I have been working with computers for over 22 years and been a network engineer for the last 7. This is the router that i have at my own house. I recommend it to all my friends who are looking for something more than the basic routers like the ones from Dlink, Netgear, Linksys, etc. I have used this router in multiple residential and commercial applications. It has never failed. It is also a great help for someone wanting to learn the Cisco IOS.
Only negative, you will need to update the IOS to the most current version to get the most out of it. But you should update the drivers on any computer equipment that you buy.

Cisco-Linksys HPRO200 HomeLink Phoneline 10M Cable/DSL Router Review

Cisco-Linksys HPRO200 HomeLink Phoneline 10M Cable/DSL Router
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I recently purchased the Linksys HPRO200 Phoneline 10M Cable/DSL Router and am very happy with its' performance. Although I did have a little trouble configuring Internet Connection Sharing, the Tech Support at Linksys was able to get me up and running after less than 5 minutes on the phone.
I previously purchased the Linksys HomeLink Phoneline 10M Network Card Kit from .... I have a Windows 2000 system networked pier to pier with a Windows ME system. Although I was able to share files between both computers, I was not able to share my Broadband Cable Internet connection.
With the Linksys Phoneline Cable/DSL Router I am now able to share my Internet Connection between both computers and I don't have to leave a "host" computer constantly running, as you would if using Internet Connections Sharing via a proxy server software program(or Microsoft Internet Connection Sharing).
In conclusion, I would definitely recommend this product to anyone who is interested in sharing their Broadband Internet Connection between two, or more, computers. You won't have to pay for additional IP addresses, as most Cable providers suggest in order to share your connection. You will also benefit from the Router's built-in NAT Firewall.

Cisco-Linksys BEFSRU31 EtherFast Cable/DSL Router with USB & 3-Port 10/100 Switch Review

Cisco-Linksys BEFSRU31 EtherFast Cable/DSL Router with USB and 3-Port 10/100 Switch
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is really an "out of the box" peripheral. I plugged it in, followed the instructions, and in no time, I had my desktop and my laptop sharing my cable modem.
The biggest advantage of this is the USB port. If you want to hook up a laptop, it'll save you as much as $50 or more because you won't have to buy a network adapter card. It's plug-and-play compatible with your USB port (though you do have to load a special driver).
The added bonus is that it creates a back-end LAN for all the machines hooked to it. That means for PC's with 10/100 cards and category 5 cables, you've got a 100 megabit highway for transferring files between those PC's.
If you want to know how fast that is... Imagine you have a 48x CD-ROM. Even with network overhead (there's next to no latency because there's only one router/hub and a few feet of cables between them), you'll be able to read files between PC's faster than you can read them off your CD-ROM.
I'm getting a new PC next week. With the transfer rate on the LAN, the entire time for copying files will be about 1/3 the time needed just to write them to a 16x CD-ROM. That's not including the time to break them into CD-sized chunks, move them between machines, and then copy them off the CD. The time savings on a few gigs translates into hours. Just from that, this thing will pay for itself.
It also makes synchronizing files on my PC and laptop a breeze. No more writing files to a CD-ROM or floppy to copy them over. Boom, baby! Just suck it down via the LAN. And if I want to download something big from the net onto my laptop, no more doing it at 56k or downloading it on the desktop and copying it over via CD. I now have high-speed internet access on both PC's... at the same time if I want it.
If you want to establish your own home LAN that shares a Cable/DSL connection to the Internet, getting a router like this is *totally* worth the money. And if you want to network in your laptop without having to buy extra equipment for it... the BEFSRU31 is the router for you! I'm loving it!
UPDATE - 6 weeks later: I now get a "network cable unplugged" error in Windows 2000 if I try to connect a PC to it via USB (I've tried on 2 PC's with 2 different USB cables to be sure). USB connections worked previously. I did everything they suggested including upgrading the firmware and re-installing the latest drivers off their web site.
Not having time to go through a return process because I needed to transfer some large files to my laptop the next day and back to my desktop a couple days after that, I bought a LAN card for my laptop. When all three of my PC's (2 desktops and my laptop) were plugged in via RJ45, the router started looping and slowed LAN transfer rates between my PC's to around the same speed as a 56k modem, though the broadband internet access does not appear to suffer.
Essentially, I can have 3 PC's connected for internet access, or 2 for LAN purposes. I should be able to connect 4 for both and even uplink it to a second hub/router for even more connectivity (theoretically, it's supposed to support up to 253 PCs). I e-mailed Linksys on Sunday. It has been four complete business days without a response. I tried calling and when I chose the option to hold for a rep (instead of leaving a message), that option was ignored and I was told to leave a message.
I have e-mailed them again, sending every bit of info they request (proof of purchase and date, online and offline contact info) and will see if they deign to respond this time.
In view of the person who wrote a review claiming his BEFSRU31 burned out twice and my recent experiences with it losing functionality (with Linksys providing most shoddy customer service), I have had to lower my rating from a 5 to a 2.

SMC2804WBR Barricade g 2.4GHz 54 Mbps Wireless Cable/DSL Broadband Router Review

SMC2804WBR Barricade g 2.4GHz 54 Mbps Wireless Cable/DSL Broadband Router
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been using the 2804WBR for several months now, and it has worked flawlessly. The difference in throughput between it and our 802.11b base stations is quite obvious.
Some observations on the other reviews of this product:
1. Current product does not appear to have any unresolved bugs, and should new firmware be released, the firmware upgrade process is extremely easy, requiring only a web browser.
2. The statement that the 2804 "cannot act as an access point" is simply incorrect. If you do not connect anything to the WAN port on the 2804, all it can do is act as an access point, and unremarkably, that's all it does. Mine is doing just that -- we have two other 802.11b routers on our network, one of which is our internet gateway and the other (an original Apple Airport base station) is acting as an AP.
Note that if you are going to use the 2804 as an access point, you probably want to turn off its DHCP server, because you probably already have another one operating.
One of the unheralded features of the 2804 (and all recent SMC routers) is that the router does not have to be rebooted for configuration changes to take effect -- you just press a button on the appropriate configuration page, and the change is saved and active. This means that in a multi-user environment you don't trash other users' connectivity when making configuration changes. Very cool, and fairly rare in consumer-grade routers.
All configuration is via web-browser, with separate "easy" and "pro" configuration systems. The 2804 configures and operates flawlessly with Macs as well as PCs, and presumably Linux boxes also.
The 2804 also has removable antennas, making it possible to add an external antenna without breaking out a soldering iron or cracking the case.
I would recommend the 2804 to anyone who needs its capabilities -- it is economical, simple to configure, and yet offers sophisticated capabilities if you want to delve into the settings a little.
The only criticism that I have of the unit is that it does not directly support dyndns.org -- but since that can be handled by a free client daemon on your computer, that is of little consequence.

Cisco-Linksys WRT160N-RM Refurbished Wireless-N Router Review

Cisco-Linksys WRT160N-RM Refurbished Wireless-N Router
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was looking for a Wireless-N router (the newest form of wireless connectivity) as most of my computers and consoles (Xbox 360 has a new wireless dongle) now have Wireless N technology. This was cheap and had fairly decent reviews so I decided to take a chance. The item arrived fairly quick and in great (I'd say practically brand new) condition and was easy to install. However, after only a few hours of use, I noticed several problems with this unit. Most of the problems seemed to be with my Macbook Pro; it wasn't getting a full signal, speeds were slow, and whenever I opened iChat, the router would instantly restart itself. After going through the hassle of purchasing and installing it, I decided to try something else before sending it back: I installed DD-WRT open source firmware on the router, and haven't looked back since.
I have never used open source firmware before, but I had read up about it before purchasing a router again. Even though the DD-WRT website listed this as not compatible, I purchased this anyway in hopes that eventually it would be released. DD-WRT for this router (version 3) wasn't supported until literally 2 weeks ago, and I was lucky enough to find a release of it on the DD-WRT support forums (easily found by doing a quick search on Google for "DD-WRT WRT160Nv3"). After downloading the mini pack and the standard pack (listed as WRT160Nv3 in the file name) I loaded the router access page (192.168.1.1) and did a web firmware update thru my FireFox browser, first starting with the mini pack, and once that is finished, then with the standard firmware for this router.
It was as easy as that, and took literally 4 minutes to upgrade it. Now, this router has been perfect. It hasn't been restarted once since it was updated with DD-WRT, the speed is fantastic, and overall, I am extremely happy to have upgraded with the new firmware. The DD-WRT firmware also has some great features like bandwidth monitoring, signal adjustment and strength meter, great security features and tons more that the standard Linksys firmware doesn't include. **Please note: there is a slight chance DD-WRT could brick (aka destroy) your router, though it doesn't appear to happen very often. Please make sure you read the DD-WRT website and support thread on this router thoroughly before upgrading it. With that said, it was the easiest and least painful upgrade I have ever done, and now this router works great.
EDIT: Please read comments section for more information and direct links.
EDIT: 12/13/10 Please be advised that this review is over a year old. Since installing DD-WRT last year, I have never had to upgrade anything or really even mess with it. However, things change quickly, and my experience then might be different from yours today. Please be sure to read the official DD-WRT website and forums for current information related to this router. Thanks
