CAT6 Xbox 360 Elite 15M (50FT) Network Cable (For Xbox LIVE) Review

CAT6 Xbox 360 Elite 15M (50FT) Network Cable (For Xbox LIVE)
Average Reviews:

This cord is a double ethernet cable stretching a long fifty feet. I use this cord to connect my Xbox 360 console to my modem in another room. It has a very fast green bar connection on all the games I play online. When using a device on the same network it tends to only slow down a bit and is usually still playable. I would recommend this as a cheap alternative to buying a Wireless Adapter. It works superbly and gets the job done.

I use these in the workplace for workstation connections and patch cables at the switch. They work well, plug in & unplug easily and seem fairly durable. We never re-use cables once used, so this has been an economical solution that performs.

I ordered this cable through Amazon and it was fulfilled by one of their vendor affiliates [...]. Within a couple of days of ordering, I received a call from [...] indicating that the item they had in stock was not in fact the same brand/model number nor shielded as shown on Amazon's site. After discussing my needs, it seemed apparent that the shielding was not needed for my application and I went ahead and let them ship me what they had in stock (I was in a bit of a hurry). The cable I received seems to be well made and is working just fine. So this review is more about the discrepancy between what was advertised vs. what the vendor actually had in stock ... Amazon, you need to be more careful in the consistency aspects of such things.

Belkin F5D5231-4 4-Port Cable/DSL Router Review

Belkin F5D5231-4 4-Port Cable/DSL Router
Average Reviews:

I originally purchased a Linksys DSL/Cable router because of a clerk's recommendation. It never worked even after I took it back and got a replacement. I then purchased a Netgear ProSafe router which sort of worked with the BellSouth DSL modem but still had all sorts of packet losses. I went back to the store and purchased the Belkin Cable/DSL router and it worked flawlessly right out of the box! I ran the set-up cd-rom, attached the cables, and I was on-line in 3 minutes. I then hooked in my wife's computer and laptop and they too worked after booting. If you have BellSouth DSL or any other "finicky" ISP, this router is the one to get, it saved the day!!

Cisco-Linksys WUSB54GC Compact Wireless-G USB Adapter Review

Cisco-Linksys WUSB54GC Compact Wireless-G USB Adapter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First off, the good. The stick gets pretty good reception, IMO.
Next the neither here nor there: if you follow the advice of the sticker and run the install CD, it will replace the standard Windows wi-fi zeroconf with Linksys's own utility. Zeroconf is not really all that great, but it would be decent of them to ask you first. If you are used to doing things the Windows way, you'd probably prefer to keep doing so. The Monitor software is not bad, but it has its own faults. You might prefer it to Windows, but don't expect any help from your resident Windows expert if you have problems with it.
Next the truly bad: the softwarte mucks around with windows settings (e.g. the notorious GTGINA.dll/logon problem) without asking permission, informing you, or giving you a clue as to who is responsible.
It is utterly amazing this thing earned a Windows compatibility sticker given this. When you buy something with the sticker, you should at least be confident you aren't going to be sucker punched by the software installing unasked for and unwanted "improvements".
This is why this software is not just BAD, it is GRATUITOUSLY bad. It's one thing to make software that is dreadful at what you buy it for (which indeed the Linksys drivers are not), it's another to spread dreadfulness around to completely unrelated functions (which the Linksys drivers do). There is no reason at all for Linksys to do this.
YOU might not have a problem right now, but in the future you may end up with mysterious and uninformative error messages which will have you digging through the Windows registry to track down.
For this reason, I strongly recommend that non-experts avoid this device. I understand that the changes this driver installs are intended to make life easier for non-experts. It may even succeed at this for some. But if you run into problems (particularly later), you are going to have to handle your resident Windows support guy getting very cranky. The problems the included software create are not only completely unrelated to the functions this device performs, they persist even if you don't have the device plugged in.
It is incumbent on a vendor, when replacing standard ways of doing things with a way that is supposed to be "better", to achieve 100% success. Otherwise they leave the poor user high and dry with no viable support. Better obvious flaws that everyone knows about than mysterious, untraceable flaws.
For Linux users, the device works flawlessly, but you have to do the following:
(1) compile the RT73 driver source and install the package.
(2) obtain the RT73 firmware deb or RPM (From the same soruce as the driver) and install it.
Once you do this, when you plug the device in the system should recognize it as a wifi network adapter and give it the device name "rausb0". You then use the method normal for your Linux distro to configure it, either iwconfig on the command line, or the KWifi program for KDE users (also Ubuntu Gnome users).
If you have never compiled a kernel module before, have no fear. Just google for "wusb54gc rt73 compile" and you'll find directions. Follow them step by step and you'll have success.

This cable is the earlier version of the cable. The cable is actual copper verses the new ones which are copper clad version. This cable weighs about 30 percent more than the copper clad version. Any question on what this means - search Google for phrase "The American market was flooded with copper clad cable imported mostly". If the cable you purchase does NOT have E201403 and LL109448 printed on it, then you have bought a counterfeit cable. The advanced networks of today often require the use of high-speed cabling to distribute data, voice and video, and with our Cat5 Patch Cables you can stay ahead of the game. These cables will accommodate speeds of up to 350 MHz when connected to the appropriate hardware. Each comes UL verified to meet all Cat 5e TIA/EIA 568-A/B standards, and drastically reduces both impedance and structural return loss (SRL) compared to standard 100 MHz wire! This is accomplished by bonding together each of the individual pairs, helping to maintain the twist-spacing throughout the line right up to your termination point. Constructed with high-quality wire, and shortened body plug design keeps their Near-end Crosstalk (NEXT) levels to a minimum. This cable is available in a variety of colors for easy identification. 50 foot - Gray

Motorola 2247-N8 Wireless DSL Modem Review

Motorola 2247-N8 Wireless DSL Modem
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I replaced an older Actiontec modem as I thought it may have been the culprit in some home network problems I was having. I have Qwest DSL as a service provider and upgraded to an Actiontec PK-5000. I also have an apple tv 2g at home. I discovered however through trial and error that the PK-5000 does not support the apple tv as it should. If plugged into the router with an Ethernet cable I was fine but it would not recognize it wirelessly.
I stopped at best buy and picked this up for 98 bucks. The store associates didn't' even recognize it as something they carried. Regardless I brought it home and hooked it up.
1.The installation is not exactly flawless. You need to know your ISP's user name for your modem to access their network. (among other things)
2.The modem won't always recognize that password. If this happens after or during installation, reset the modem by holding down the reset button for 15 sec. + then find it in your browser. The address is not typical and you should look at the little book that comes with it.
3.There is only ONE phone jack in the back so unless you have a splitter you can't have DSL and your phone going through this modem.
4.The menus for configuration could certainly be a nicer interface BUT if you know your way around security protocols and have ½ a brain you should be able to fumble through and make your wireless secure.
5.It recognized apple tv 2g through its wireless connection in short order, I simply had to re-input my security key.
6.Your home laptop may tell you that your security settings don't match the wireless settings of the network. (delete the wireless connection and re-look for wireless connections) Again fumble your way through and you'll get it.
Now I will say that through all of my fumbling around I had it set up and working on my desktop, laptop, Wii, and apple tv 2g in about 40 minutes. It seems to work great, pages seem to load quickly, speed tests are averaging the same as they were before (that being said, the rural community I live in is having serious speed issues with qwest) and there is peace in the valley. It's a bit more spendy than other DSL modems but it does support ADSL2, does allow Ethernet connections (3 not 4 as one is used for your DSL connection) and it is a low profile unit that hides well in your office. The biggest drawbacks I see are the telephone jack and the price you pay for "commercial grade firewall protection" ummmm ok I saw nothing on this modem that was not on my 5 year old modem as far as security goes but it does have plenty of security that YOU MUST ENABLE it is not automatic. (Some people seem to think this is the case...weird)
I will update this review if anything changes...Happy Surfing!

Efficient Networks 12A-5100-001 SpeedStream 5100 DSL Modem Review

Efficient Networks 12A-5100-001 SpeedStream 5100 DSL Modem
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the DSL ethernet modem that currently is shipped to those who buy SBC/Yahoo DSL services. If you need a modem in a second room, and you don't want to lug the modem and its wires around, then you may want to consider buying a second modem.
The best thing about it (and most important for a non-techie user like myself) is that it comes (ALMOST) complete and is generally easy to install. An included CD shows installation steps; however, there is an overemphasis on desktop vs. laptop computers. Basically you plug in the modem, and attach one of the included wires into an included DSL filter. THis "filter" goes straight to your telephone jack. It's like a "splitter," in that the filter has one socket for the line to the modem and one to your telephone. Now, you can talk on the phone and be on the internet at the same time.
Here's why the setup is not totally complete. If your laptop computer did not come with one, you will need a device such as the "Linksys PCM200 EtherFast 10/100 32-Bit Integrated CardBus PC Card" (please see my review of this on Amazon.com; the Linksys can get a little tricky). Similar devices are available for desktop computers. This device easily plugs into a "port" on the side of a laptop, or is placed in an open port of a desktop. A different, yellow wire (included with the Speedstream) connects the plugged-in Linksys (or similar product) to the Speedstream modem.
THe Speedstream box comes with the modem, a power adapter, several DSL filters to connect to your phone outlets, cables (RJ-45, RJ-11), a written guide and and a CD containing self-install software. It works in Windows or Mac environments, and desktops, laptops, or workstations--as long as they have "a standard 10Base-T Ethernet port." For either WIndows or MAC, you'll need 64 MB of RAM, at least 100MB free disk space left, and a CD-ROM or DVD drive. The listed "minimum system requirements" also include a 256-color adaptor with 800 x 600 resolution for those with Windows (i.e., a PC instead of a Mac).
Again, please look at the reviews for the ethernet device sold by Linksys and perhaps a few other companies. That was the weak link (no pun intended) in the installation. Everything else was fairly easy. I've had the Speedstream 5100 for about a week now and have had very few problems. You do need to make sure that the cable connections are secure before attempting to get on the internet.

This 50' cable was a great price and worked well for my purpose of connecting from hub to blu-ray player (running it through the attic). The snagless protectors work well, particularly when fishing through holes.

For voice/data/video distribution, this cable will handle bandwidth-intensive applications up to 350 MHz. Meets all Cat5E TIA/EIA standards, and drastically reduces both impedance and structural return loss (SRL) when compared to standard 100 MHz wire. Each of the individual pairs is bonded together to help maintain the twist-spacing throughout the line right up to the termination point. Constructed from high-quality cable and a shortened body plug, this design minimizes Near-End Crosstalk (NEXT) levels. The molded, snagless boot prevents unwanted cable snags during installation and provides extra strain relief. Available in a variety of colors to easily color-code your network installation. Uses:1000 BASE-T; 100 BASE-T; 10 BASE-T (IEEE 802.3) , 4/16 Mbps Token Ring (IEEE 802.5); 100 VG-AnyLAN , 100 Mbps TP-PMD (ANSI X3T9.5); 55/155 Mbps ATM , Voice

I purchased this item with some reservations. I have no regrets the cable is solid. I have squeeze these clips through some narrow spaces with no problems the anti-snag clips work like a charm it did not hook up on anything. Good item good prices and a great deal.
